"Life can be whatever you want it to be.
All you have to do is make a wish." - RuPaul Andre CharlesRuPaul Andre Charles, or simply, RuPaul, is by far the most unique individual ever to emerge onto the entertainment scene. His life has been a remarkable journey, from growing up in an all female household in San Diego, to selling used cars as a teenager in Atlanta, to becoming the very successful and glamorous artist that he is today. When asked once who he most admired in his life, he answered, "My mother. She was the fiercest drag queen I've ever known." It's easy to see where RuPaul got his inspiration. The 6' 7" superstar found success in Manhattan's nightclub scene before making it big with his debut album, "Supermodel Of The World", which collected three #1 Billboard maxi single chart hits. His 1997 album, "Foxy Lady", received rave reviews. RuPaul has also been a featured artist on other albums, including Elton John's "Duets" album, where he recorded the now famous rendition of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" with Elton. In 1994, RuPaul expanded his nightclub act to one hour, and previewed it at Las Vegas's Sahara Hotel, where he received the honor of being the first star ever to be invited back for a second run before his first stint was completed. It was also in 1994 that he co-hosted the infamous "Brit Awards". RuPaul has also blazed a trail as being the first drag queen to become a spokesmodel for a major cosmetics company, M.A.C. cosmetics. He has written an autobiography, titled "Lettin' It All Hang Out", which was published by Hyperion in 1995. RuPaul is also the host of his own talk show, appropriately titled, "The Rupaul Show", which began it's second season in spring of 1998, and hosts a morning show for the top rated New York radio statio, WKTV. RuPaul has also appeared on numerous TV talk shows. When once asked what it was like to be so much in demand, he replied, "I feel like a hooker in a honky-tonk". RuPaul is also not just another pretty face. He wrote most of his songs, and was involved in all aspects of their production. He's also a co-chairmain for the M.A.C. Aids Fund, which shows that not only is he glamorous, but he has a heart, too. |
