PRIDE SYMBOLS: LAMBDA AND LABRYS
The lambda was originally chosen as a gay symbol because it was the Greek letter L, which stood for "liberation." In 1974 at the International Gay Rights Congress in Edinburgh, Scotland, representatives voted to adopt the lambda as the international symbol for gay rights. The Lambda is usually closely associated to activism and the struggle for equality. Labrys. An icon for lesbians, this double-edged sword or axe was a symbolic weapon of the Amazon women, an ancient community of warrior women who lived without men. |
